In the summer of 2001, travelers throughout New Mexico were treated to perhaps the strangest sight since the Spanish introduced horses to the Southwest four centuries ago.

"Leading artists in the Southwest were invited to paint, decorate or imaginatively transform over one hundred life-size polyurethane horses into works of art." The ponies were then placed in the parks and plazas, lobbies and galleries throughout New Mexico. The collection has been on display from June to October. On November 6, the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe will host a live auction of the ponies. Interest has been so great for this unique event, that a sequel in 2002 is now in the planning stages. www.gopaintedponies.com
